Ava DuVernay born August 24, 72 from Long Beach California. DuVernay began to develop her artistic and creative side when she was a young girl because of her Aunt Denise. The aunt who was a night shift nurse, let her pursue art literature and the theater in the daylight. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was able to see through her mother's model of that art can be an instrument for activism. DuVernay learned to be socially conscious through her mother. DuVernay's dad recalled the civil rights marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the Selma town that was nearby, Alabama. The DuVernay family visited Selma over the summers and was later inspired to create a film on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated with a graduation certificate in Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. In the year 1990, she graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood CA. DuVernay developed an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. She started as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was told to examine the garbage from a home belonging to a jury member. In the course of her work she was dissatisfied with journalistic work and entered the public relations industry. DuVernay was immediately hired after graduating from college as a junior publicist at a small studio. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999. The company launched a number of lifestyle and promotion networks which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
